Looking for a thrilling cooperative board game review for couples paired with an easy-drinking California Pinot Noir? Welcome to the latest episode of Meeples & Wine, the podcast where board game reviews meet wine tasting for couples who love gaming nights with a glass in hand. Hosts Michael and Suzy dive into Arkham Horror: Final Hour, a tense Fantasy Flight Games title that drops you into Miskatonic University as a monstrous Ancient One tears through reality. This is a special replay of Michael’s earlier solo-play episode—perfect if you missed it the first time or want a refresher before your next couples game night. In this episode of the Meeples & Wine board game podcast, we taste Prophecy Pinot Noir 2024 while breaking down the rules, strategies, and relationship-friendly (or not) aspects of Arkham Horror: Final Hour.
What Wine Are We Tasting Today?
Prophecy Pinot Noir 2024 from Prophecy Wines (California)
Bouquet of toasted oak and ripe raspberry. Plush and smooth mouthfeel with luscious layers of red cherry and strawberry complemented by brown spice notes.
Pairings: Beef, veal, game meats, and savory dishes—ideal for a cozy game-night dinner before the monsters arrive.
What Game Are We Playing?
Arkham Horror: Final Hour
You arrived too late to stop the loathsome rite. A monstrous, transdimensional Ancient One tears through reality as an iridescent rift slashes the skies over Miskatonic University. Investigators must hold back the horde long enough to reverse the summoning before the campus—and the world—falls.
- BGG Rating: 6.5/10
- Weight/Complexity: 2.28/5
- Players: 1–4
- Designers: Todd Michlitsch & Carlo A. Rossi
- Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
- Type/Mechanisms: Territory control vibes, monster management (“Monster Closet”), good/bad play decisions
How It Plays (Quick Rules Summary)
The game runs over a maximum of 8 rounds. Each round has an Action Phase (investigators move, attack monsters, and investigate clues using action cards—choose top positive or bottom investigative effects; priority cards set resolution order; no sharing card info) and an Ancient One Phase (negative effects, monster spawns via gates, ritual advancement).
Win by matching clue tokens to ritual icons to reverse the summoning. Lose if the ritual site is overrun, any investigator is eliminated, or time runs out. Key tension comes from balancing monster control with clue-gathering under hidden information and a hard timer.
No expansions.
